Our Mission & Story
At The Literary Diversity Initiative, our mission revolves around carefully curating a selection of books and crafting essential resources that highlight the narratives of APIDA and various other marginalized communities. Our primary objective is to seamlessly integrate these literary works into the English curricula of high schools throughout the United States. We firmly believe in the profound impact of literature in establishing meaningful connections and nurturing a sense of representation among all students. This initiative was sparked by the realization of the absence of Asian American stories within traditional high school reading materials. Through fruitful collaboration with English department administrators at a local high school, we successfully added On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous by Ocean Vuong (see Resources & Recommendations) to the choice-book unit in junior year classrooms. This step paved the way for our then goal of integrating four APIDA-focused books into the core curriculum, allocating one book for each academic year of high school. In light of the concerning surge in book bans and legislative actions that seek to curtail the voices of minorities, we have subsequently expanded our advocacy efforts by launching this national initiative. Our overarching objective is to inspire educational institutions across the nation to embrace a diverse range of inclusive literature that not only amplifies underrepresented voices but also significantly enriches the academic journey for every single student.
